How acupuncture may help back pain
For chronic low back pain, the American College of Physicians recommends that patients and clinicians first choose non-drug approaches, and acupuncture is one of the options named in its 2017 guideline.
A large analysis of 39 randomized trials with more than 20,000 patients found that acupuncture reduced chronic musculoskeletal pain more than both sham acupuncture and no acupuncture. Results vary from person to person, so Dr. Su tracks your progress and adjusts your plan.
- Chronic lower back pain and stiffness
- Sciatica and pain that travels into the buttock or leg
- Back pain related to disc problems
- Back muscle tension from sports, lifting, or long hours of sitting
- Back pain after a car accident or work injury
Our approach
Each visit is built around your history and goals. Depending on your needs, Dr. Su may combine acupuncture with cupping, gua sha, or Tuina, and she offers practical guidance on posture, movement, sleep, and stress that supports recovery between visits.
When to see a doctor first
Seek medical care right away if back pain comes with numbness in the groin or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, leg weakness that is getting worse, fever, unexplained weight loss, or follows a serious fall or accident.

Frequently asked questions
What happens at the first visit?
Dr. Su reviews your health history, current symptoms, and goals, then completes a hands-on assessment that includes traditional pulse and abdominal assessment. She explains a suggested care plan before acupuncture begins, so you know what to expect.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how long you have had symptoms, your overall health, and how you respond. Dr. Su will discuss a suggested plan after your first visit and review your progress with you along the way.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very thin. Most people feel a brief pinch, tingling, warmth, or a dull ache at the needle site, and many find the session relaxing. You can tell Dr. Su at any time if something feels uncomfortable.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Auto insurance MedPay benefits and Workers' Compensation claims may cover acupuncture, depending on your policy or open claim. Health plan coverage varies, so please contact the clinic before your first visit and we will help you verify your benefits and prepare the billing documentation.
Do you offer care in Chinese?
Yes. Care is available in English and Chinese.
