How acupuncture may help neck and shoulder pain

A large analysis of 39 randomized trials found that acupuncture reduced chronic musculoskeletal pain and shoulder pain more than sham acupuncture and more than no acupuncture.

Neck and shoulder pain is often linked to posture, screen time, sleep position, stress, and old injuries. Dr. Su looks at these patterns together so that your care plan addresses more than the sore spot.

  • Neck and shoulder tension from computer or desk work
  • Stiff neck and limited turning
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Shoulder pain related to sports or repetitive strain
  • Tension headaches linked to tight neck muscles
  • Neck pain after a car accident (whiplash)

Our approach

Visits may combine acupuncture with cupping or gua sha to release tight muscles and improve local circulation, along with simple posture and movement habits you can use at work and at home.

When to see a doctor first

Seek medical care right away for neck pain with fever and a stiff neck, new weakness or numbness in an arm, trouble walking, or pain after a significant fall or accident.

Frequently asked questions

What happens at the first visit?

Dr. Su reviews your health history, current symptoms, and goals, then completes a hands-on assessment that includes traditional pulse and abdominal assessment. She explains a suggested care plan before acupuncture begins, so you know what to expect.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how long you have had symptoms, your overall health, and how you respond. Dr. Su will discuss a suggested plan after your first visit and review your progress with you along the way.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin. Most people feel a brief pinch, tingling, warmth, or a dull ache at the needle site, and many find the session relaxing. You can tell Dr. Su at any time if something feels uncomfortable.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Auto insurance MedPay benefits and Workers' Compensation claims may cover acupuncture, depending on your policy or open claim. Health plan coverage varies, so please contact the clinic before your first visit and we will help you verify your benefits and prepare the billing documentation.

Do you offer care in Chinese?

Yes. Care is available in English and Chinese.
