For many people receiving hemodialysis, treatment can help remove excess fluid and metabolic waste from the blood. However, dialysis does not completely replace all of the functions of healthy kidneys. Some patients may continue to experience symptoms that affect their comfort and quality of life.
Common Symptoms in Dialysis Patients
Depending on an individual’s medical condition and dialysis adequacy, patients may experience:
- Itchy skin (pruritus) — persistent or widespread itching can be particularly bothersome, especially at night.
- Poor appetite — changes in taste, nausea, fatigue, and other factors may reduce interest in food.
- Sleep problems — itching, restless legs, discomfort, anxiety, and changes in daily routines may interfere with sleep.
- Fatigue — many dialysis patients experience tiredness before or after dialysis.
- Musculoskeletal discomfort — muscle tension, joint discomfort, and chronic pain may affect daily activities.
- Numbness or tingling in the hands — some patients may experience symptoms associated with nerve compression, including carpal tunnel syndrome.
These symptoms can have multiple causes. They should not automatically be attributed to “insufficient dialysis.” Dialysis adequacy, anemia, mineral and bone disorders, medications, nutrition, diabetes, nerve problems, skin conditions, and other medical factors may all contribute.
Where Acupuncture May Fit
Acupuncture does not replace dialysis or nephrology care. Instead, it may be considered as a complementary approach for symptom support.
Research on acupuncture and related techniques has explored their potential role in symptoms such as:
- Itching and discomfort
- Sleep disturbance
- Fatigue
- Pain and muscle tension
- Numbness or discomfort associated with certain nerve conditions
- Stress and overall well-being
The goal is not to treat kidney failure itself, but to support comfort and quality of life while the patient continues appropriate medical and dialysis care.
Safety Is Especially Important
Dialysis patients require special precautions.
Acupuncture treatment should be individualized, with careful attention to:
- The location of the AV fistula or vascular access
- Anticoagulant use during dialysis
- Bleeding and infection risk
- Blood pressure and overall medical stability
- Diabetes and other underlying conditions
The dialysis access site should never be needled. Patients should also inform both their dialysis team and acupuncturist about their current medications, vascular access, and any recent medical changes.
Integrative Care for Dialysis Patients
Living with dialysis is a long-term journey. In addition to appropriate nephrology care and dialysis, attention to sleep, nutrition, physical activity, emotional well-being, pain, and other symptoms can be an important part of supporting quality of life.
At Grace Fountain Acupuncture, acupuncture is offered as a complementary approach for selected symptoms experienced by people living with chronic kidney disease or dialysis. Care is individualized and coordinated with the patient’s existing medical care when appropriate.
If you are receiving dialysis and experiencing persistent itching, poor sleep, fatigue, pain, numbness, or other symptoms, discuss them with your nephrologist or dialysis team. Additional evaluation may be needed to identify and address the underlying cause.
This educational information is for general educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent kidney disease or any other medical condition. Acupuncture is a complementary approach and does not replace dialysis, medications, laboratory monitoring, or care from a nephrologist or other qualified healthcare professional. Individual results may vary.
